How Singing Enhances Self Concept

By Lee Larossier

The way you are perceived by other people is different for each person, depending on the way they view life and a number of other factors. The most important perception of you is driven by your own self concept though, which is a key driving force throughout your life.

Whilst the opinions of those around us is influenced by external factors, so is our self concept. One of the most influential factors in this regard is the society we are surrounded by. Influencing how we present ourselves, this is actually very much determined by our own perspective however.

Such is the importance of the way people view themselves, parts of the medical and scientific world are focused on researching it. Understanding how to measure and develop it are seen as important, at as early an age as possible. However, only limited success has so far been seen.

Whilst progress has been seen in both areas for older children, the five through eight group has not. Such is the importance of life perception at this age, for adolescence, pubescence and beyond, still much work continues into how things can be improved.

There have been studies which have highlighted areas where improvements could be made. Most particularly they have highlighted that better measurement tools, more focused result analysis and enhancing methods used will help.

The studies have also seen practical development ideas being introduced. One such initiative which has produced positive results has been the introduction of singing in a group. This has been shown to improve integration skills and also positively improve health and perception.

The way a person sees themselves affects the life choices that are made personally, and made for them. Contributing significantly to financial, spiritual and societal success therefore, understanding self concept is important. Recognizing where it is lacking early, and being able to improve it, could help transform the lives of many thousands.
