It has been said that people spend a third of their life sleeping. There are five stages that the brain goes through when sleeping. This may differ from the light or slightly awake sleeping phase. The next stage will deal with the positive and the negative waves that seem to be coming out of the brain in the area. This is the portion where the heart rate is slowing down for the past few minutes into the life of the person. It is during this stage that the heartbeat of the person is unable to make things done in return. Sleep paralysis may happen during this stage as protection to prevent the person from reenacting their dreams.

The third stage is the part where the brain begins to produce the delta waves which can only happen when the brain is going to a transitional phase between the light and the deep sleep. Delta waves are the type of waves which are of high amplitude that humans emit while asleep. This is said to be produced by the Thalamus area.

The slow wave sleep is the last stage before the person gets to the Fast Optic movement phase which is known as the REM phase. This phase has been said to restore and refresh the person mentally and physically. The brainwaves are now at its delta stage in a few minutes.

The brain undergoes these cycles by emitting waves called the alpha, beta, delta and theta waves which is the waves which represents the state of the person. Delta is said to be the slowest among the four waves being released. Theta is only present during the period that people are sleeping lightly. Alpha and the beta waves, are among the fastest waves.

An average adult would need at least seven to eight hours of sleep while children between three to five years old will need eleven to thirteen hours of sleep. Most dreams are said to last for forty five to sixty minutes.
